GI:
Granny smith apples have a GI of 44, and Golden Delicious Apples a GI of 39. Not only are they low GI, but they are a good source of Vitamin C and fibre. In a number of recipes I have used apples to add sweetness to a dish in place of sugar. For a low GI diet, the old adage “an apple a day” really is a good rule of thumb!!!

Consider growing your own, (more likely to be successful in a cooler climate). You can buy dwarf apple trees which only grow to 1-2 metres high from various stockists in Australia, including Kendall Farms.

How to choose ripe fruit:
Use your senses- when buying apples, smell one! A fresh apple will have a tangy, sweet aroma and make you feel awake! You may also notice your taste buds twinging as if you had already taken a bite. You can tell if an apple is floury/ grainy by gently bobbing it up and down in your hand. A fresh apple has high water content and will feel firm. An overripe apple will thud against your hand, and be lighter.

Storage:
Cool, dry, and away from overripe fruit or flowers or too much light.
